On Creeds, Confessions, and Statements of Faith

I think it's funny that some churches can genuinely detest the idea of Creeds and Confessions -- and then turn around and have a "Statement of Faith," "Our Distinctives," or "We Believe" page on their church website.

I think it's even funnier that these churches frequently hold attestation (read: Confession) of agreement with their "Statement of Faith" (or other similar) document as a condition of membership.

To each his own, I guess. Praise the Lord for the Priesthood of the Individual Believer.

  1. Hi Steve :-) so I know this post is over 4 years old but I was searching on Google for (ironically enough) the statement of faith by Hopewell in Napa. Anyways, I think it's important to be informed about a churches stance on Jesus and the Bible before I give them my ear. The Bible tells us to be discerning and hold everything up to His word and truth, so... regardless of a church's stance on "creeds and statements of faith" we (should) both know that reading that information is beneficial for someone who is looking for our visiting a new church. I don't want to sound harsh and I hope you take this in the spirit with which it was written :-) God bless brother!

  2. Erika,

Thanks for the comment. I know full well that Creeds and Statements of Faith are important.

I was just commenting on the irony of having a Statement of Faith, on the one hand, which begins with, "We believe...", and then turning right around and preaching, from the pulpit, that "we don't need any Creeds! No Creed but Christ! We just follow the Bible! Creeds are man-made!"

The irony is that the word "creed" is from the Latin for "we believe".

Hi! Feel free to comment. However, I was getting posts from different Anonymous people, and it's difficult to know who is who so I can keep the conversation straight in my head. So I'm requesting that you please bear with my weakness, and identify yourself. Even if you want to use a different name than your real name -- that's fine. But give yourself a handle for me, please. :) Thanks...
